Touring Holidays in your Classic Car

Whether you own a Vintage, Veteran or Modern Classic motorcar, taking it to the continent on a Touring Holiday can provide you with memories to last you a lifetime – and it need not be either expensive or risky.

ERL (European Routes for Leisure) carry out detailed research in order to provide a safe, memorable and completely unique car touring holiday experience. The objective is to provide a leisurely, unstressful drive through magnificent countryside, unique and special Hotels and Restaurants, points of historical interest or sheer beauty – places that would be very difficult to arrange or find alone.

Touring HolidaysHowever, there are practical considerations that need to be addressed – all of which really come down to common sense. In the first instance, touring with an experienced and ‘enthusiast’ operator like ERL provides significant peace of mind. The roads will be appropriate for your car. If the tour has enough participants (usually about 30 vehicles), an experienced mechanic will accompany the tour, and be available to help with any problems free of charge (except parts). Tour managers will be available at all times to ensure that hotels, restaurants and organised stops at Chateaux etc are ready and prepared for your arrival, and to help with any other logistical problems that may be encountered.

For smaller tours, the organisors will have earmarked mechanics and garages set up to provide assistance should it be required – and they will be able to help with most problems that arise – though given the variety and age of the vehicles, this can never be guaranteed for every vehicle. Some problems will inevitably be terminal – but that is the nature of old cars. In these, thankfully very rare, instances, your breakdown cover will come into force.

Car Touring Holiday Essentials

Which brings me to what you should do before embarkation. The first to consider are the basics – and forgive me for teaching Granny etc, but it’s amazing what some people manage to forget. Passports, Insurance including continental breakdown and personal cover, and Maps (even though ERL will provide you with a detailed Tour Guide – most tours include some ‘free days’ to do as you please, and you may prefer, on some legs, to do your own route. If you have a Manual for your car, it could be useful, as will some basic spare parts, especially if they are non-standard – spark plugs, light bulbs etc, or whatever you think your car might need. It goes without saying that you should have your car properly serviced and checked over beforehand, especially tyres, timing, ignition, wipers etc. Again, a matter of common sense – you know your car, and should also know its strengths and weakness’. A jar of Swarfega is often useful too…

In summary, taking your car on a tour to the continent can be an experience that you will never forget – and it really isn’t difficult. However, its not the same as taking your Company BMW – you do need to put a little thought and effort into ensuring that it’s a dream holiday for all the right reasons.

Happy motoring!
